A Day with My Mom

Last week my mom and I were able to spend the whole day together and we had a blast!!

I must say that there is a new love and respect I have for that woman as I prepare to bring my own child into this wide world... when I didn't think I could love her any more than I already do! I assume this new love will continue to grow deeper as I begin to live out my own version of being a mother to a daughter.
Our adventure included:

A trip to The KC Zoo...

Getting lost on our way home,
finding some good eats at this fun little spot...

And running errands around town... I am so excited to introduce Aliyah to my mom - I just know the three of us will go on many fun adventures together.

Another Day at the Doctor's

Yesterday was the last day that I get to see my OB until she returns from Europe on May 10th! I suppose I could see her again if this little one decides to come over the weekend, but since Aliyah hasn't even dropped yet, I am hoping for her to hold out until at least May 10th :)

I was so encouraged by my OB yesterday after giving her a copy of our 'birth vision' - she read it, said that it looked great and then told me, "If I am at your delivery or not, stick to your guns. You absolutely can do this without an epidural and if that is what you want to do, don't let anybody else try to talk you into one." I JUST LOVE HER!!!! She has also delivered babies for other women who have used our doula - Vanessa Flood (check her out... we love her too) - and thinks that she is a great doula and will be a wonderful advocate for us as well. How could I not leave that office with a huge smile on my face?!?!

(Of course I know there is a time and a place for medical intervention and will go into labor with an open heart, but it is still pretty great to hear reassurance from my doctor that I CAN DO THIS!!)

On the other hand... The weight thing finally hit me yesterday as I stepped on the scale to find that I’ve now gained 30 pounds overall and while it’s not a huge concern - the nurse did say to me “Marcie, your little girl is going to spend her last few weeks putting on weight - so the more weight you gain, you more weight she gains - and the more weight she gains, the more weight you have to deliver”

Then I made a face like this:

But after my appointment, Tyler treated me to dinner and despite the warnings I finished things off with a chocolate malt milkshake. My reasoning: Baby fat is squishy stuff, right?

Also, I’m an inch away from no longer fitting into booth seating anymore. Getting in and out is a lot like trying to pick out the funny bone in the game Operation without getting buzzed.

Push Present

On Monday, a jewelry catalog came in the mail and I caught Tyler flipping through it last night. I asked him if he was looking for a “push present” for me. To which he responded “Push present? Oh, I know what that is... it’s when I pull out a present to give you when you are pushing?” Hahahaha. Talk about motivation... “Here honey, push out our kid and I’ll give you this lovely Tiffany’s bracelet.”

After I finished laughing hysterically at the thought of that... I informed him that a better time to deliver such a gift would probably be after she’s born. And that I don’t really need a push present... I’ve got everything I need. (and I really truly mean that) But he seemed to like the idea, so I mentioned that if I really start to get into the weeds during our natural birth plan, I may be motivated by a new pair of shoes... just FYI.

Summary: I think footwear could come into play as a possible labor motivator.

Nesting Around the House

Aliyah's room is pretty much all set (nursery tour to come)... So to stay busy I am now venturing out to other rooms throughout the house. Tyler is really loving the growing to-do list (poor guy)!!

Spiced up the main bathroom with a little gold paint...

Freshened up the dinning room chairs with new seat covers...

I would also like to add that I mowed the front yard today (almost 38 weeks pregnant)... to avoid laundry - Yes, I hate doing laundry THAT much - ha!

Baby Update

Wednesday at the doctor's I learned that my OB will be leaving for Europe in two weeks AND my pediatrician will be out-of-town on my due date/the day after: WHAT?!?! Don't they know I am trying to have a baby?!?

On the upside, I did find out that I am already 60% effaced and "a good one centimeter" - whoo hoo!! My doctor also informed me that Aliyah seems to be in agreement with our plan to go natural and has already wiggled herself in a great position for birth.

Also, I found out that my wonderful friend Nicole is pregnant with baby number two!!! CONGRATS ALDERSONS!!!!!!

Pretty Shoes

I snagged a coupon in the mail to DSW and decided to treat myself to some new shoes. At the store, one of the sales girls looked at me like I was crazy as I stood there in front of the mirror, giantly pregnant and teetering in heels... “They’ll be fun to wear after the baby comes” she said with a smile. After?? They'd be fun to wear now!

I gave up tuna, raw cookie dough, and red wine when I got pregnant - but I’m not giving up my pretty shoes

thankyouverymuch

Fun and Funky

Even with all of the adorable little girl outfits out there, I like to keep my eye out for funky pieces that are a little out of the norm. I found these adorable overall longies made from reclaimed sweaters on etsy. They are so warm and cozy and perfect for a cool, spring Kansas City day.

New Stroller

Everyone is having a good ‘ol time with Aliyah’s new stroller - most notably, her father - who has on more than one occasion taken it for a spin around the house “to test it out”

In the picture above, I caught him shoving his giant man-sized head inside so that he could see what her “view” would be when she is strapped in. (He is such a weirdo in the BEST kind of way)

The fun never ends.

Fashionista

I didn’t see it on any of the runways during Fashion Week, but this pregnant belly of mine is THE fashion accessory of my spring wardrobe.

Weekend Recap

You gave us a little scare this weekend. Your typical ninja/square dance routine of kicking me constantly came to a screeching halt on Saturday and as much as I tried not to worry, I finally caved in and called the doctor at the end of the day. “She’s just not moving like she normally does” I said to them, thinking of how I’ve spent all day visiting with friends and family with my hands on my belly waiting for you to wiggle around growing increasingly concerned.

To make sure everything is ok in there, they told us to come visit the labor/delivery area at the hospital for a non-stress test to monitor your heart rate and movements since it was after-hours at the main office.

We were given the blessing of listening to your heart beat for 30 mins (part of the test) while I laid back and watched The Animal Planet. The good news is that you appear to be in a period of growth and your decreased movements are due to less room for you to move around in my belly.

They said your heart sounded perfectly healthy and the machine even showed that I was having (VERY) minor contractions - cool!! What started off as a great concern ended up as a lovely night of confirmations that you are strong and healthy.

Keep growing and we’ll keep dreaming

Pretty Pushers

We’ve got to pack our hospital bag in the next two weeks and I’ve had the hardest time deciding what exactly I’m supposed to wear. I’m most comfortable in soft cotton tanks and leggings - but leggings won’t work for baby delivering… and my nightgowns don't seem appropriate either. I figured I’d probably just be stuck wearing one of those awful hospital issued gowns...

Until I found this - Pretty Pushers - a cute delivery gown. This ingenious little garment is designed for laboring women to be soft, comfortable, and completely versatile. It has openings in all the right places so that you’re completely covered but still accessible. I am planning on ordering the one on the left and I can’t wait to throw that bad boy on when we get to the hospital!

Milk Mustache

So at dinner last night I was downing milk like nobody's business... the funny thing is that pre-preggers I didn't really touch the stuff... Tyler noticed when I was on my third glass and said, "Geeze, your going to give Aliyah a milk mustache down there!!"

I couldn't stop laughing at the image that kept popping into my head:

Bump @ 36 Weeks

36 Weeks!!!

What a cutie!!! During our weekly birthing class Tyler tried on the empathy belly. It was pretty entertaining watching him tie his shoes, pick up things off the floor and lay down rolling side to side pretending to "stay on his side of the bed". Moving around was a little more awkward than he had thought, but he was such a good sport... nice boobs Tyler!

Here is a picture of us together sporting the 36 week belly bump:

Our Baby's Lullaby

I've been working on the tune/lyrics for a little while and I have just begun to play the song all the way through without welling up with big fat tears.

I usually do not share any of the songs I write or play on the guitar because it is just something I like to do to for me... no vocal or guitar lessons - I just love playing around. I have had requests to share Aliyah's lullaby so please keep in mind that I am just a mama who loves her baby. I will NOT be attending any auditions to American Idol :)

I am so blessed to be carrying this child. All I can think about is dancing around the living room with her in my arms, or watching Tyler cuddle with her as I play her song.

This is your song Aliyah. I wrote this for you and you alone. I hope it always plays in your heart no matter where this wide world takes you.

Dream big.

9 MONTHS!!!!!

We’ve hit the 30 day mark until my due date and are officially in the 9th month of pregnancy! Tyler has started to whisper to Aliyah that if she’s in the mood to come early, he wouldn’t mind it one bit. Every day he tells me how he is just so ready to have her in his arms.

Me - I’m torn. Even as I begin to slowly grow increasingly uncomfortable from baby feet that repeatively kick me in the ribs and a body that moves at half the speed it used to - I can’t help but think that my days of having Ali all to myself are coming to an end. She’s safe and warm inside of me and I can nurture and protect her in a way that I will never be able to again once she is born.

I am so ready to memorize the curve of her nose, the smell of her skin, the sound of her cry. I dream of watching her sleep in her father’s strong arms… but these last 30 or so days have become increasingly precious to me. They are all that remain of this amazing journey she and I have taken together. Currently, we exist in the same breath and live from the same blood - and I am in no rush to end it

Value

In life, you will hear the word value many times. Our society sometimes has a bad habit of looking at everything in terms of dollars and cents. Often our worth is measured in “things” - in how much we can acquire.

Our hope is that we can teach you the truth about value. In our house, there will never be a baby doll that will remain in its box because it’s “worth” more that way. There is no dollar amount that could be paid for a collectible that would ever equal the joy it could bring in your tiny hands. We will always encourage you to take that doll out of the box, comb out her braids, lose her shoes in the backyard if you want to - so long as you feel the value in the experience.

Your daddy and I were cleaning out the garage this weekend and value came up in our conversation as we went through some of our old stuff... We talked about an episode of Antiques Roadshow I had seen while channel surfing: The appraiser told a little old man holding a first edition copy of a Faulkner classic that it would have been worth more had it not shown such obvious signs of wear, “It was read too much,” he said. READ TO MUCH? What a life that little book has had! What VALUE it has brought to those who have read its pages.

I think the greatest injustice you could ever do to a literary work would be to to sit it in on a shelf, collecting dust... where it could never experience the magic of eyes upon a page - never sharing its story solely because someone said it’s worth more if it is never read.

We hope to teach you that the more weathered something is - the more it has LIVED! The more it has lived - the more valued it should be. We will measure our worth in how much we love each other and those around us. Our value will be in the rich experiences of our lives.

I am certain that as a family, we will be scuffed up and bruised from time to time, but we will be LIVING openly and out loud and that - my darling girl - is what makes the life we share together, priceless.

Bullseye

Something has become shockingly apparent to me - it seems that my belly has a huge, blinking bullseye on it that everyone except I can see.

I know there are a lot of women that don’t like people touching their baby bump without asking. It’s never bothered me - I’m just as in awe of it as everyone else and usually say something to the extent of “CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE I AM GROWING A BABY IN THERE? GO ON POKE AROUND ALL YOU WANT!” But it still amuses me at how quickly I am losing the popularity contest against my own belly.

I think this is just another step in preparation for motherhood. Hand over the baby and get out of the way.

How Sweet It Is...

I close my eyes at night wondering where would I be without you in my life... you bright up for me all of my days,
with a love so sweet in so many ways.
-- James Taylor

When we began, I don’t think we even realized it. We weren’t looking for the ride, we were merely going. Or following. Or both. And then somewhere along the way, I looked down at your hand holding mine and realized I never wanted to go too far away from your touch, from your capable fingers, your flowing heart.

Together we have built a life and lived a dream. Becoming your wife has been the joy of my existence. If I accomplish nothing else before the last note of this sweet symphony that we call our life rings out, know that I have accomplished more than I imagined possible. I have had the exquisite opportunity of living day after day, year after year knowing what it feels like to give and receive true love.

I fall asleep every night with your palm against the warm skin of my growing belly and wake up to your whispers in my ear. I need nothing else in the world but a hundred more years of you and only you.

Happy 4th wedding anniversary my darling.

Love,
Marcie

Paper Butterflies

I am absolutely in love with Ali's sweet butterfly mobile/chandelier! I like that it hangs from the ceiling vs. attaching to the crib. I like that she will be able to use it as she grows (I would have loved to hang this in my dorm room in college). I like that it is so simple and moves with the natural breezes in the room.

I think these butterflies are a
perfect addition for our spring babe...
Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life. And everyone deserves a little sunshine

Newborn Necessities

We’re in final countdown mode (with a month and one week left) and the handy dandy list from the nice folks at Consumer Reports is helping me keep my cool.

My nesting tendencies have gone into overdrive - I have washed every blanket, sock, outfit, hat, cloth diaper, sheet… etc that will possibly come in contact with our child in her first three months (and even beyond). I reorganize everything in her room every three days. I can’t help it - my baby bird is on her way and the need to prepare her space is overwhelming at times (although I’m still waiting for it to kick in when I know I need to clean the toilet or organize our office area)

I keep referring to the list, mentally saying “check, check, check” as I read down it - and reminding myself that we’re prepped and ready.

Let's do this!

Another Sweet Shower for Baby Aliyah

HUGE blessings found us this weekend - One of my very best friends, Amy Hill, threw me the sweetest baby shower with a little help from her mom Diane and a few of our other lovely friends here in the city.
Amy and her mom really pulled out all the stops to throw Ali and me such a wonderful shower! The menu featured fresh fruit with dip, cheese and crackers, amazing chicken biscuits (which I could eat 10 at a time), pink lemonade, and a delicious home-made chocolate layered cake. We played a fun memory game with baby items, and then everyone wrote down great advice for me once Aliyah gets here.
The house was decorated in beautiful pinks and browns. Amy and her hubby made chocolate baby carriage suckers and this very cute diaper wreath that hug on the front door.

It was the sweetest little party I have ever been to! I hope all you girls know how much it meant to me!! THANK YOU

A Peek Inside the Closet

Here's a little peek inside Aliyah Jacquelyn’s growing closet. We have been incredibly blessed by the generosity of our friends and family. Our little jewel has already amassed quite the collection of clothes. I keep finding myself inside her small closet, holding up each item, imagining what it will be like to pull her chubby little arms through the sleeves or a pair of embroidered socks over her toes.

I had to include these cute slippers that Tyler found at the store yesterday and brought home for his little girl... Tyler always points out the baby items with alligators followed by a "Look it's our 'Ali'gator"
